On Tuesday Womans Hour carried an item about the problem of older women drivers - they have more, mostly minor, driving accidents than men, although it was not clear if this just reflects the fact that the ratio of females to males increases progressively from 1.1 at age 71, to 2.1 by the age of 89.
One of the discussants said that the bus pass was making a contribution to solving the problem – she personally knew three people who had voluntarily given up driving since these became available.
Another reason to think hard - or at least to do a proper evaluation – before glibly deciding that this is one non-means-tested benefit we can afford to do without
