Listening to the enemy

A programme on Radio 4 yesterday morning told the “little-known story of around 300 young men who were selected to learn Chinese at the start of their National Service and then sent to Hong Kong to eavesdrop on Chinese communications.”

Well I don’t suppose it would be all that well known if there were only 300 of them. If I ever met one of them they never let on, though I do know quite a few who were trained to do the same job in Russian; I guess they were much more numerous.
