When we were children we were told that people who worked in chocolate factories were allowed to eat as much of the product as they liked as it passed them on the production line.
They soon got sick of this freedom & most hardly availed themselves of the privilege at all after the first few weeks.
The story was used to teach moderation, to put an end to any importunate demands from us for yet more sweets or chocolate – imagine what life would be like if we lost the pleasure through overindulgence.
If we follow that logic it seems sensible to begin by allowing bankers, whose business is the making of money, to grab as much as they like in the form of bonuses.
But why do they not get sick of it?
