Electronic cash

It is now received wisdom that in a few years’ time cash will be redundant & all payments will be made by electronic means.

Well maybe.

But we shall need first to solve two problems.

Everybody will have to be able to understand basic accounting, just to keep track of their money. There will be no analogue way to do it.

Maybe there will be lots of whizzy new visual apps, to aid the numerically challenged. Or maybe there will just be more trust in the world.

I don’t buy the idea that cash will be less susceptible to manipulation by the criminally minded – ingenuity will always find a way.

But the main problem will be ensuring that we have a fail-safe back up system in case the electricity goes off.
