The sky over Glossop & Kinder Scout was black as night as we passed & it was only then that I noticed that the road we were on was completely dry. There was no sign of rain when we got home, unlike Thursday evening when they had had the downpour while we in town stayed dry.
Several times later in the evening we thought we heard thunder rumbling nearby. There may have been a little, though the rain held off, but after a while it became clear that the muggy atmosphere was just amplifying the rumble of any heavy vehicle, or plane, in the vicinity, an effect which is still in play today. We are normally blissfully unaware of planes passing over the village, except for the con trails, or the faint rumble of the few which come in late at night or very early in the morning. Not so this midday, conversation had to pause while the planes went over, & FM reception was rubbish.
