Many years ago an eminent philosopher told me he'd persuaded his cat to become a vegan … "You must have provided the cat with some pretty powerful arguments," I said jokingly.My ear being well & truly caught I became distracted by his accent – what was that which I could hear, a bit faintly, underneath. Could it really be the North East? I can’t say Geordie because I know that term has a very specific local meaning to those in the know – but yes, Professor Gray comes from South Shields & has kept some of the distinct intonation despite his years at Oxford, Harvard & the LSE.
