Street robbery

Wood Green Crown Court heard a lurid tale last week: “A team of serial stranglers … preyed upon women alone, who seemed to be wealthy

The ‘team’ had, it appears, 2 members – brothers aged 27 & 28. One would put his arm round the victims throat from behind while the other grabbed jewellery & other valuables. One or both also carried a knife

Shocking, daring & terrifying. No doubt about that

But it is an easy crime – does not need detailed advance planning, a large team or expensive equipment & there is a ready market for the proceeds – only low level qualifications needed, not many bars to entry. So, always a low life crime directed, alarmingly, against the socially advantaged

The Victorians called it garroting; in the Caribbean it is choke & rob

Serial strangler just fits much better with our modern obsession with the serial killer

Garotting and the lash
